This is a post for the Re-discovering Hastings Street series.
I enjoy walking a lot in our neighbourhood, and now with the blog, I enjoy it even more as I get to know the community, their wonderful stories, how they started, their vision and the realization of their dreams. As I write this, I reminisce the atmosphere and the conversations. Oh, what fun and an inspiration it is to know Oui Paris Café and the people behind it. Theresa and Laura, you two are very wonderful women.. Thank you for welcoming me.. and Thank you for giving us a taste of Paris, just right next door!
We moved in the neighbourhood November of 2013 (oh my! almost a year now!). Like I said, I walk a lot in the area, pushing Rianne and Ryan on a stroller. Early this year, I’ve been seeing a renovation for a space here in The Heights. I peak through the windows eagerly to have a look at what’s inside. Who wouldn’t be excited?! New café?! and Oh dear, you should look at all the furnishings.. More so eagerly, I wanted it to open soon. Finally, last spring of this year, the wait is over. March 31, 2014, this beautiful café offering a taste of Paris opened up to the public. I’m sure it’s not just me who’s waiting. The buzz about this elegant café has been all over Burnaby and Vancouver.
I wanted to go! But I don’t want to go alone! It’s a girl thing, you know?! I would enjoy visiting a new cafe with a girl friend. I guess.. it is perfect timing and I found the perfect person! I asked, Christina of Motherpreneur TV, and a previous café owner in Holland, if she wants to check it out (instead of our original plan to go biking, why not? right?!). Sure enough, we were both very excited!
As we walked through we were like little girls grinning in excitement and looking at all the details. AH-mazing! It was a beautiful place to be! And coming from a café owner herself, she was impressed. It is a lot of work to start your own food business and a café such as this, it’s sweat and tears yet a fruit of their creativity, passion, a reality of a dream.
So there we are, sipping our tea and coffee, having a great time, connecting, sharing visions, getting advice, deepening a friendship, just chillin’ in such a cozy place as this..
Meet the Team at Oui Paris Café
Oui Paris Café is run by sisters Theresa and Laura as well as Theresa’s son, Enzo. Theresa is the idea behind it all while Laura specializes in customer service and son Enzo manages the food and is the cafe’s crepe chef (a must try!). It is a family run business, so you get the care of a family.. That is Theresa’s vision. She wants the café to be welcoming, warm, cozy, comfortable.. a place to chill, hang out, have a great time with friends, a place for conversations over a cup of coffee or tea, a place of smiles and warm hearts. As for me, it’s a place to celebrate ‘me’, a quiet time to just look around and think, admire the beauty that surrounds me, a place that inspires me to do my art, a place that reminds me to be grateful.. A place that makes me feel like I’m in Paris even just for an hour or two.
Now, wouldn’t you want to move where we live?! We have awesome neighbours!!
I don’t even know where to start.. the conversation over a cup of a sumptuously delicious dark hot cocoa.. I wouldn’t want to forget. Read on..
Living in Australia for years, Theresa came back to Vancouver in 2007. Little did she know a big change in her life is about to come up.. in 2009, she miraculously survived a brain aneurism. This near death experience has changed her perspective and has brought so much wisdom and appreciation towards life. A natural entrepreneur herself, she owned 2 cafés in Melbourne, a retail store, did some business consulting, as well as managing her husband’s entertainment business. At Oui Paris, she brings in years of experience and expertise as she used to work in the food services for years at the Banquet Department of the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver and the Princess Cruise Lines. Urged by the desire to bring the “Australian Coffee Culture”, plus the inspiration brought by the Magnolia Bakery, in New York, sprung the idea of opening a café of her own in Vancouver. It took her a few years to find a space for her vision until she found the space where it sits now, just on the corner of Hastings and Gilmore in Burnaby Heights.
So.. why the name, Oui Paris? Believe it or not, it wasn’t the original name Theresa thought of. It was somewhere in the likes of “Serendipity” but she couldn’t get the licence for it as there is one so similar to it in Chilliwack. What a dismay.. She asked herself.. “where would I rather be”? And the answer is.. Paris. Oui Paris! Yes, Paris!
Have a step into Oui Paris with this short video tour.
From the name, the concept and vision became clearer and so she researched more about Paris. More than the food and drinks, she looked into the style, furnishings, murals, decor and so much more so that as soon as you step in .. You’d feel and say to yourslef, “Yes! I’m in Paris!”.
Theresa, an interior designer by profession who worked as one of the pioneers for IKEA in BC, incorporated a French Country feel. Everything you see from the tables and chairs, ceiling chandeliers to floors are all refurbished, re-upholstered, reclaimed and repainted, and all done by Theresa! Isn’t that amazing! You’re not going to believe how she transformed these old and forgotten pieces into elegance and class.
